SEVIER COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK VOL 2

EXTENSION

The Sevier County, Tennessee & its Heritage – Vol. 2 book Committee has announced an extension of the deadline for submitting materials and/or ordering a copy of the forthcoming book. The new deadline is 15th March 2010. The decision was made based on the volume of calls and request from local residents, concerned because they had missed the 5th January 2010 deadline.

The Sevier County Jail which was constructed in 1893 to replace the old log Jail. The photo was taken from the Courthouse lawn and the iron fence encloses the Courthouse grounds. This jail was torn down in the early 1950's.

Sevier County Tennessee

Located in East Tennessee, Sevier County has the distinction of having three birthdays: in 1785 under the State of Franklin, in 1794 under the Southwest Territory, and in 1796 under the State of Tennessee. Sevierville, the county seat, and the county were named in honor of John Sevier. The land area of 592.3 square miles has a varied topography which consists of fertile lowlands along the French Broad and Little Pigeon Rivers, the hilly portion drained by the Forks of Little Pigeon River, and the majestic peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains, including Clingman's Dome, the highest mountain peak in Tennessee
