Sevier County, TN. The Sevier County Public Library System is offering a Lap-Sit Story Time Program for babies and toddlers up to 15 months old. The Lap-Sit Program designed to engage parents and babies in finger plays, movement activities, songs and rhymes as well as bright and colorful books, will enhance the child’s pre-literacy skills.
Pre-literacy skills are the skills a child knows about reading and writing before the child can actually read or write. They learn these skills from parents who are a child’s best “teacher” to get the child ready for learning to read. According to Saroj Ghoting, Early Childhood Literacy Consultant, “Children who are read to three times a week or more do much better in later development than children who are read to less than three times a week.” So, it is especially important to start sharing books, talking and singing with babies and young toddlers as soon as possible.
The Lap-Sit Program is held at the Sevier County Library each Thursday at 10:30. Pre-registration is required as the programs are limited to 12 parents and 12 babies or young toddlers.
