History Center Programs

The history center has a lot of books and other resources that patrons can use to learn about or research the past.  But the history center offers so much more including a full range of programs to educate and entertain all ages.  Come see us throughout the year and enjoy programs like these and others:

  • The 2nd Monday of each month from 12pm to 4pm the history center hosts a “Genealogy Talk”.  We have no agenda we just gather in the Genealogy/History Center and talk about genealogy.
  • The 3rd Thursday of each month from 5pm to 7pm, don’t miss the “3rd Thursday SCPLS History Center Lecture Series”. This Series is based on all things history and genealogy, there are different professional speakers each month.
  • The 1st weekend of November (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), is our annual  “Genealogy Conference”.  Each year we do a different theme. The 2012 theme was Repositories and 2013 is Story Telling.  Watch for updates for next year’s theme and plans.
  • The 1st Wednesday from 9am to 12pm and 4th Thursday from 1pm to 4pm the history center conducts “Oral Interviews”. We are gathering the stories of the Appalachian people and the dialects of the mountains and our community that are being lost over time in order to preserve them for future generations.  We would love to have you tell your story.

In June and July, on each Thursday 5pm to 7pm we have a special “Summer Reading Program”, history center style! We do basic classes on how to do genealogy and offer lecture programs throughout the summer.
